L.Wing – Lower ribs and rib supports – 3/31/2016

Today we installed the lower wing ribs and the wing supports. We used the same wing rib support lengths as on our right wing. 6.125″ for #10, 7.357″ for #1 – 1/8″ increments Combination of pretend flying and wanting to prove that we didn’t build 2 left wings.

L.Wing – rib duplicity – 3/30/216

Today we started working on the left wing.  This is all deja vu – stuff that we just did for the right wing.  It took us about 50 hours to do the right wing, this wing should be 20 hours faster and turn out a little better.   Twisting the devil sweep/anti-sweep cables   Upper…

R.Wing – leading edge trial fit – 3/25/2016

Today we worked on installing the leading edge for the right wing.   Ethan’s workstation – reviewing the instructions Strap on the wingtip then drill and cleco Need to line up the holes with the wing rib supports Access holes for wing strut plate bolts Left leading edge is damaged.  It is made of light…

R.Wing – Riveting Wingtip and cuff – 3/23/16

Due to a month-long break and doing some steps out of order, we forgot to pull some rivets on the wingtip until just after we’d installed the outboard trailing edge cuff over them.  We tried reaching under the cuff to do them, but none of our tools reached.  Rather than drill out all the…

R.Wing – Wingtip and Cuffs – 2/11/16

We worked on 61.7 pages 48 and 49 today – drilling holes for rivets in the wing tip and trailing edge wing cuffs. Next time we should be riveting those on permanently. It was nice working on the wing while it was in the stand, easier than working on the sawhorses for this task. Drilling…

Wing Stand – 1/31/2016

I found some plans for a wing stand which I think originate from the EAA. We’re going to need something like that as the wings will be more fragile with the cuffs and leading edges which seem to be less tough than their rain gutter cousins.  I made it a little taller and a little…

R.Wing – trailing edge cuffs – 1/21/2016

We installed the trailing edge cuffs on the right wing today. After you mark the rivets for attaching the wingtip you cut off the excess inboard material. We taped it and cut through the tape with the airsaw to reduce splintering. Next step is to attach the trailing edge wing cuffs. The directions talk about…

R.Wing – Attaching Wingtip – 1/18/2016

We worked on attaching the right wingtip today.  This seemed like a more difficult thing, perhaps because it was different in terms of needing to measure very carefully and not wanting to ruin an expensive wing tip. Specifically, estimating where the wing rib is when you can’t tell for sure is time consuming.  You need…

Flap and Aileron – 1/17/2016

First we built the frise aileron and then attached it.  Next came the flaps. The aileron is used as a template to tell how to attach the wing tip. The gap should be 1/8 inch.   The Frise Ailerons use these standoff hinges. We’re going to have to convert the flaps from 912 flaps to…
