Aeromomentum Engine Notes – January 2018

We talked to Mark Kettering from Aeromomentum at Oshkosh this summer.  He did a great job of answering all our questions and we bought an engine from him.  We chose the AM15 upright 117hp engine.  The higher HP options can be achieved by modifying the 117HP engine without turbocharging and using higher octane fuel.
Since then we have been corresponding and here’s a summary of what we have learned.
New parts available for the AM15 include a new Megasquirt engine mgt system, new radiator, a new muffler, and a new flywheel.
* The Megasquirt is a new engine control option.  It’s built on a widely-used aftermarket engine controller platform for which the source code is available for user modification.  It would greatly simplify integration with a CAN-based engine monitor.  Switching to the Megasquirt requires installing a different crank encoder, which necessitates drilling a small hole in the oil pump housing – something that Aeromomentum can do (if we want to send that part back to them) or send us drawings to do ourselves. We are considering whether we want to switch to the Megasquirt or stick with the older Bosch system.  The Bosch system is “self tuning” but of course not always the way we want.  The MicroSquirt allows for more simple communication but does not support OBD2.  Here are some links that you might find useful:

Aeromomentum also has a new flywheel with integrated tone ring instead of the welded on tone ring.  We are returning the old one to exchange for the new one.  It does not require a flywheel puller to remove.
* The new radiator is a better shape and is tall enough that it eliminates the need for an additional coolant reservoir bottle.
* We need to order some additional hardware that was not included with our base engine purchase.
1. Root Tube Mount, Pair                EM1-005 $395.00
2. Bolt and Spacer Set                    EM1-003 $45.17
3. Engine Mount Rubber Bushings   EM1-004 $58.00
4. Muffler                                        EXI-004  $192.00
5. Radiator Mount – not listed but available upon request
6. Root Tube Angle – could order from AM or fabricate ourselves.  You need to use 2x2x1/4 inch angle aluminum.
Here’s a cad drawing of what the mount looks like on the Searey root tube.  You can sign up for a free onshape.com account and this is a public model called SeareyAM15_EngineMounts
